Central theme.

The central theme of the novel is the morality and psychology of a murderer. The play follows Raskolnikov, an impoverished student who commits a murder and then struggles with his conscience and guilt. The story explores questions about good and evil, justice and redemption.

The ax is the tool he uses to carry out this heinous act, but it also becomes a constant reminder of his sin. It represents his internal struggle between his desire for power and his guilty conscience.

On the other hand, the ax can be seen as a tool that triggers a series of events that eventually lead to the protagonist's redemption and transformation. This contrast illustrates the complexity of the human condition and how a person's actions can have multiple meanings.
